This weekend, I watched a third of the 1964 Julie Andrews classic Mary Poppins with my daughter, Ariadne.
Now, you’re probably wondering why on earth I’m referencing Mary Poppins in a legal recruitment context. Bear with me. My daughter’s attention span for TV is very short — but for some reason, she sat still for 15 minutes and was completely engrossed. We cuddled on the sofa, and I loved every moment. What struck me most was how the film celebrates finding joy in the simplest parts of life — even in something as mundane as tidying up. Of course, it helps when there’s a song involved.
One song in particular stuck with both me and Ariadne: “A Spoonful of Sugar.”
It begins:
“In every job that must be done
There is an element of fun
You find the fun and snap!
The job’s a game…”
Honestly? Those words really got me thinking about the conversations I have with incredible lawyers every day as a recruiter. Often, they’re questioning whether law is still for them, craving flexibility, or just needing a change of scenery. When you dig into it, the common thread is clear: they’re searching for joy, purpose, and a genuine sense of belonging in their work — their own “spoonful of sugar.”
Because let’s face it — that creeping Sunday evening dread? The one that cuts your weekend short and leaves a pit in your stomach? It’s real. And it’s debilitating. But sometimes, it’s not the job you’ve fallen out of love with — it’s your current situation.
And when that snap! happens — when you find the right role, the right environment — everything changes. Work doesn’t have to feel heavy. There’s fun to be found, fulfilment to be rediscovered.
So, if you’re in that in-between place, unsure whether to stay or go — let’s talk. Confidentially, no pressure. Just a chat about how we might find your version of that spoonful of sugar.
I’ll do my best to help you find it.
