LAW Absolute is currently recruiting to two permanent Childcare Lawyer positions with the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham.
The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham has spent the last few years going through an ambitious transformation programme in order to build a council that is capable of delivering real change for the community. Whilst this change has resulted in the council winning the LGC Driving Growth award and the LGC Entrepreneurial Council of the Year 2019 award, they are looking to recruit ambitious and proactive Lawyers who can help them take things further.
About the position
Childcare Lawyers within the local authority are expected to undertake the following duties:
- Provide advice, representation and undertake research relating to childcare matters, including; public law care proceedings, adoption, child protection and fostering
- Carry a caseload of matters in proceedings and pre – proceedings (circa 15 cases in proceedings)
- Attend meetings with expert witnesses
- Prepare briefs to Counsel for more complex hearings- candidates will be expected to undertake advocacy at more straight forward hearings
- Attend legal planning meetings when required
The successful candidates will be required to pick up a caseload from the outset, therefore it is important you have previous experience carrying a full childcare caseload with minimal supervision. Candidates from both the public and private sector with relevant experience are encouraged to apply for this position, as the councils current staff is drawn from both sectors. The role will be based in the councils London offices which offer excellent transport links. Due to the current covid-19 situation the roles will start remotely with current staff working from home until September.
The council offers legal assistant support and also a team of in house advocates, who can undertake complex hearings on behalf of the council.
The successful candidate will not only have previous childcare experience but will also be ambitious, driven by delivering a high quality service and be able to work under pressure. It is important for the client that candidates are committed to this area of law and have a genuine enthusiasm for their work. The ability to work to tight deadlines is essential. Candidates must have a current practising certificate.
