Plebgate libel latest
14th February 2014
British Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell, who was at the centre of the Plebgate saga that attracted widespread media attention, has returned to his legal representation of Graham Atkins from Atkins Thomson and David Sherborne of media and entertainment law firm 5RB.
Mitchell has asked the two lawyers to defend him in the latest libel row to have developed from the Plebgate scandal, which has seen a libel claim lodged against him by Toby Rowland, a Metropolitan Police officer.
Rowland has taken on the top legal recruitment of Slater & Gordon partner Jeremy Clarke-Williams as he accuses Mitchell of libel over claims that he lied about the much-debated ‘pleb’ insult allegedly thrown at police officers as he attempted to leave Downing Street on his bike in 2012.
No date has been set for the case as yet and human rights group Liberty has said that they will intervene in the legal battle should the case proceed, declaring in this article, “the case would set a dangerous and unconstitutional precedent for ordinary people’s dealings with the police”.
