Legal Awards Recognise Rise of In-House Sector
25th June 2012
The In-House Lawyer of the Year category in The Lawyer’s annual awards has revealed a lot about the rise of in-house and general counsel roles in the last few years, with both the competition and demand for places increasing.
Many companies are recognising the benefit of in-house lawyers as opposed to hiring private practices on an as-needed basis. A good general counsel doesn’t just tell their company what they can’t do; they also give advice on what is possible, opening up new avenues for the company. Time is also precious as there is no hourly rate, so succinct, focused, advice is a must.
Of course, there is still plenty of room for private practices, and companies that do not need a full-time general counsel will always look to them, but those that do require an in-house team are creating highly sought after lawyer jobs, and that doesn’t look set to stop anytime soon.
