Huhne partner loses Daily Mail harassment case
24th May 2012
Associated Newspapers has won a legal battle against Carina Trimingham, the partner of former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Chris Huhne, who claimed that the Daily Mail newspaper had harassed her.
Making the ruling against Trimingham, who was previously Huhne’s press adviser, Mr Justice Tugendhat said that her claims were baseless because she did not actually dispute any of the paper’s allegations. Instead, Tugendhat explained, Ms Trimingham’s case was mainly based on references that were made to her appearance and sexuality.
Despite the judgement in favour of Associated Newspapers, the group was warned that this did not give it license to repeat any of the disputed stories again and that their behaviour would be monitored in the future.
The action saw barristers from the same chambers representing the opposing sides, with the QCs in question instructed by partners holding two of the top solicitor jobs in the country.
