Interview Technique
An interview for a temporary or contract position is likely to be a one-stage process.
The following steps should ensure you are in the best position to maximise your potential in an interview.
Preparation is key: It is imperative to prepare yourself for every interview. The more you know about the organisation, team, job, interviewer(s) and interview format, the better you will peform in the interview.
The consultant who has arranged the interview should be able to answer many of your questions. You can also use tools such as the internet.
Gather as much information as possible including the following: -
- General information on the organisation.
- Number of people in the legal department/team.
- The exact location of the interview. Work out the likely amount of time the journey will be and, if possible, allow yourself an extra 30 minutes.
- Whom will conduct the interview and his/her/their job title(s).Is it possible to learn about their backgrounds?
- The format and duration that the interview will be.
- The job description and the background of the job for which you are interviewing including the reason for the vacancy.
- Number of other shortlisted applicants.
- The proposed rate of pay for the job.
In the interview:
- Arrive promptly at the the right location.
- Dress smartly in a conservative business suit. Even if the organisation has a 'dress down' policy it is adviseable to wear a suit to the interview.
- A firm handshake, smile and excellent eye contact are all crucial. This may sound like a cliche but even the most experienced and capable candidates can lose their nerve in interview and following these basic gestures will help hide nerves and give you confidence.
- Know your c.v. inside out and be prepared to answer any questions about any aspect of it.
- Have a short (written or mental) list of questions. You may be invited to ask questions at the end of the interview and a couple of intelligent questions will be impressive. However, if the interview has included a very comprehensive overview and has answered all your questions, it is fine to say so.
- Aim for an offer:Even if you have decided during the course of the interview that you do not want the job, always do your absolute best to perform well and close the interview on a positive note. Always thank the interviewer for his/her time.
